Skin & Coat Health
Keeping your dog's skin and coat clean and healthy is very important. Knowing the type of coat your dog has will make it easier to understand the best way to maintain it.
Smooth Coat: Noticeably smooth and shiny, this coat requires little maintenance.
Examples of breeds include the Boston Terrier, Basset Hound, and Labrador.
Medium Coat: This coat is about an inch in length. While still relatively low in maintenance, this dog will require more frequent bathing and brushing as the shedding will be more observable. Keep in mind that these dogs will have an undercoat that acts as insulation to keep them both cool and warm. Because of this the coat should not be shaved as it can permanently damage the 2 layers of hair.
Examples of breeds include the Australian Shepherd, Golden Retriever, andBorder Collie.
Long Coat: This coat can be found on a variety of dogs, ranging from a Collie to a Yorkie. These coats require a great deal of brushing to keep the hair de-matted.
Wire-Haired Coat: Exactly as it sounds, the wire-haired coat should be coarse. Dogs with this kind of coat do not shed which means it is very important to keep up on brushing.
Example of breeds include the Westie, Scottish Terrier, and Border Terrier
Wavy Coat: Characterized by curls, this coat requires daily brushing and frequent baths. Grooming every 6-8 weeks is also necessary to maintain the quality of your dog's 'do.
Example of breeds include the Poodle, Bichon Frise, and Portuguese Water Dog
5 Ways to Improve Your Dog's Skin & Coat
1. Feed a corn, wheat, & soy free diet! These are common allergens that can create an array of health problems
2. Enhance your dog's diet with an omega-enriched oil, such as fish oil, flax seed oil, or sunflower seed oil.
3. Bathe every 4-6 weeks to remove any toxins & allergens from the skin & coat.
4. Brush your dog's coat on a regular basis to remove tangles. Trapped hair can form mats and prevent oxygen from reaching the skin.
5. Treat your dog year round for fleas and ticks. Bug bites like these can make the skin itchy & inflamed.
